Spring has arrived! We at TSR thought it was time for a change of pace with a visit to the Green Living Show. Canada's largest green consumer show pulled out the stops this year, showing a strong commitment to educating the public about easy and workable solutions for leading an eco-smart lifestyle. We visited on its opening day while it hosted schools from the GTA.
The vibe was great, with enthusiastic vendors spreading the message of sustainable living amongst the younger generation. We spent a bit of time grilling a couple of exhibitors, and on all cases, every person we spoke to was incredibly well informed, passionate and willing to take the time to explain their product and its contribution to a healthier planet.
Another thing we liked about the show was its positive message and support of local farmers and organisations. An example is the Toyota Farm Fresh Fare; in support of Evergreen and Slow Food Toronto, produce provided by a local farmer was prepared by talented chefs for debauched gourmet nibbles. The freshness of ingredients and skill of the chefs caused us to spend two hours sampling. For standouts, we noted gourmet offerings from Mildred's Temple Kitchen, Parts & Labour, Splendido, Chocosol Chocalatiers, Magic Oven and Hall's Kitchen.
We reckon you could spend a whole day looking at the wide range of exhibitor booths, or attending one of their many symposiums, panels and demonstrations. Participate and ride a free Eco-cab while you're at it! Look out for the vintage Steamwhistle hot rod, 'Retro Electro', modified to run on 100% green electricity. Lastly, we dare you to hug the giant beaver set up at the Parks Canada booth.
If it is your first time considering going to the Green Living Show, ignore all the taunts and phase out the word 'greenie' from your lexicon. It is worth experiencing. The skeptics do not know what they are missing! The show is accessible to all, well run, and is a marvelous resource for those interested in a more sustainable lifestyle.
The Green Living Show runs from 15-17 April. Check out their website at www.greenlivingonline.com
