Edward Burtkynsky : Oil

Edward Burtynsky Oil Fields #22 Cold Lake, Alberta, Canada, 2001
We went down to the Royal Ontario Museum for the media preview of Edward Burtynsky's latest exhibition, Oil. Presented by the Ryerson Gallery and Research Centre, the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival and Scotiabank Group, Edward is one of Canada's most iconic contemporary photographers.

Based on a controversial subject, the oil industry, Edward's touch on the subject is recognisable and palpable. Blown up big, with his photos generally larger than 4ft across, you gaze into a photo and get lost in its details. He is a master of his craft and like all true artists, makes you a touch jealous. He is also so approachable.

We recommend looking at his work, maybe buy one of his books or watch the documentary "Manufactured Landscapes". Expect a couple of hours of self-analysis as you realise his work is near genius... in so many ways much what all artists strive to achieve.
