TSR decided to head down to Second City to catch an end-of-season show, The Late Night Cabaret. It was a dark, sparkly night of variety and unabashed laughter. Starting right away, we happily crammed into the tiny box office bar and grabbed a vodka soda and lime for $6. Fair! We also had a good time chatting with people and talked to Bill Murdoch, MP for Bruce Grey Owen Sound and proud father of one of the performers, Angola Murdoch. One of the aerial acrobats, she was the very reason we were there.
Reid Janisse was quite charming and hilarious as host, sexing up the audience with flair. Thanks to our photo editor, I was volunteered for a bit - I was asked to do my best "When Harry Met Sally" and voiced my excitement to a crescendo while he read a Betty Crocker recipe for roast meat. He definitively got a live one there. Still blushing!
There is full service throughout the show. We were slightly disappointed with the The Party Sampler, but it sufficed. There weren't enough fries and the meat portions were really small for $14. However, we enjoyed two massive Mudslides, one of their yummy signature specials. You can get it in a souvenir glass which you can take home! It is worth hitting Second City just for that.
What can we say? So many acts stood out. There was everything that we could have asked for. There were gorgeous vocalists, witty comedy skits, contortionists and aerial acrobats. There isn't enough space to mention them all individually. However, the stand out moments still stay with the acrobatic performances of Angola and Miranda Tempest. The Late Night Cabaret at Second City is first rate. It is a different show every time.
The Late Night Cabaret is now in off season, but it starts up again in 2012. It runs for 75 minutes and comes out at $12! For more information, go to www.secondcity.com
