NXNE Picnic Series - Live in Bellwoods

Hardworking as ever, two editors at TSR decided to spend an entire Friday afternoon at Trinity Bellwoods Park, at the NXNE Picnic Series, listening to the sweet sounds of al fresco acoustic. At first, we couldn't figure out exactly where the bands were performing, but we soon spotted the impromptu 'stage' by the large crowd of cool 20-somethings sitting over blankets and scattered vintage bicycles.

The lineup was opened by Charlotte Cornfield and included The Balconies, Olenka & the Autumn Lovers, Enjoy Your Pumas, Doldrums and Freedom or Death.

Everyone has their favorite! We really enjoyed Charlotte's set. Her melodies are catchy and she has a quaint, old-world voice that carries well over crowds and murmurs. She also played with finesse and had humour. As the opening act, we are gushing and it is all we can say about this gamine girl that doesn't sound slightly stalker-ish. Her music is perfect for a summer day or an autumn night.

Thanks goes out for the free beer by Stella Artois, further improving the great idea of skiving off the office on Friday. Our reporter buddies had the same idea and it was saturated with photographers and media. However, chaotic media pit it was not. Everyone was respectful and the only incident we can mention are the random little old ladies salvaging beer bottles, purposely walking in front of performing bands. Perhaps some sanctity next time? It was funny for a while but we are sure it killed the vibe of the performers somewhat.

If you're interested in chilling out, NXNE's Picnic Series is perfect for intimate sessions where you get to talk to the performers after. Usually loud, riotous music followed by a sweaty crowd is exchanged for soothing sounds under a canopy of trees. Variety is key to enjoying summer. The Picnic Series is something new and seriously the best thing for acoustic lovers.
