We tripped down to the middle of Parkdale on a Tuesday night to hear Mark Martyre play. A fresh faced songwriter in a tiny bar, he drew in people off the street with his energy. It was a little surreal to be at a gig so early in the week, but rolling with it paid off.
Among bar regulars and a crowded room, Mark shared the night with Gray, a songstress with a lot on her mind. Both of them spun a little cocoon of happiness and were equally pitched against one another. While Gray sang about truth, Mark played for a charmed life, where music should be listened to intently. It felt like a private show, with us lucky few watching an encore set. Our favorite song of the night was "Trying to explain" which gave that little heavy feeling in the pit of your chest. A couple of pints had been drunk and a few friends found when we made it out, late. If you miss that 3AM feeling, Mark Martyre is good for you.
FREEBIE - We have a pair of CDs from Mark Martyre and another from Gray. Get them by emailing us at editors@torontosocialreview.com with the title "I want those bootleg CDs".
