The film component of the documentary media festival DOC NOW takes place Wednesday, May 29 and Thursday, May 30 at the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema in the Annex. Celebrating the work of students graduating from Ryerson’s Documentary Media Master of Fine Arts program, the festival is hosting 30 documentary projects in various mediums – film, photography, new media, and individual installations.
Two film projects to check out tomorrow night are “The World in Ten Blocks: Stories from Bloor Street,” a film by Robinder Uppal and Marc Serpa Francoeur, and “On Reserve,” a film by Chris Beaver.
“The World in Ten Blocks: Stories from Bloor Street” won the Cuban Hat’s 'Connect the Docs' transmedia pitching event at Hot Docs 2013. Described as a “transmedia documentary about the immigration experiences of small business owners in one of the world's most culturally diverse neighbourhoods,” it explores the personal experiences of recent immigrants covering ten blocks of Bloor Street West (between Dufferin and Crawford Streets). The film will be screening at 7:45pm on Wednesday, May 29, at the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema.
“On Reserve” is screening the same night at 6:00pm. A film by MFA candidate Chris Beaver, it explores themes of “First Nations identity and the repercussions of the Indian Act.”
DOC NOW is free to the public and installations are available for viewing at various locations now until July 2.
