Sandman Viper Command at Edgefest 2011

Who/What is a Sandman Viper Command? We think they're the most promising new band out of Edgefest. Hailing from Burlington where the town celebrity is maple syrup, these four lads rocked out the stage and drew audiences like bees to honey.

Sure, most performers at Edgefest are pretty cool. However, there is something more in them. You almost hate the fact that they sound so good and are so freaking young. Baring against unforgiving Saturday afternoon heat, we saw hoardes of people walk across the turf and past the main Edgefest stage to hear them play. If you've ever been to any Downsview concert, you know how hard this is.

Their music is soulful, catchy, with smart lyrics accompanied by raw, fat guitar riffs. You cannot deny their ghost in the machine. When lead Rob Janson is given time, you catch snatches of old school Brit pop. He is slick and makes you see yourself in a grey industrial town, kicking a can and walking with your mates. "The Best of Plans" is our favourite song from their album "Everybody See This" and may be a nod of things to come. Who knows? Their music is the sound of Canadiana with a touch of Brit angst. Their allotted set at Edgefest was way too short. This young band has a great sound and their songs are homage with a new take. You can tell where they've come from... and it sure ain't suburbia.
