CANTABILE: An Evening of Italian Music

The event's most stylish posse.
Helen Klukach chats with Andrew Burashko
A treat awaits anyone who attends a performance by the Art of Time EnsembleCantabile: An Evening of Italian Music, under the artistic direction of Andrew Burashko, features the music of Italy led by voices Michael Ciufo and Dominic Mancuso. On for only two nights, we wish there were more run dates for us to drag some friends to. Experiencing such a contemporary,  personable arrangement is rare. The show was a joy to watch, held up by the machismo of its stars, Ciufo a 25-year old Tenor and Mancuso a Toronto-born, free-flowing, swinging jazz cat.

Most astounding is the shy humility of the ensemble and Andrew Burashko, who we surmise may have to be poked up to stage to take credit. His intimate understanding of cultures and their musical preferences results in a clash of genres, where the Art of Time Ensemble truly brings classical performances to a modern audience. It is an innovation, it is almost an invention.

Although Cantabile plays for only one more night, it heralds the opening of their 2012 season. If you manage to grab a hold of their beautifully designed program, expositions in music include Brasil, Russia and a celebration of the 45th anniversary of Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band. We've already bought tickets, you should too.
